Our Story
How It Started
Lembeh Resort started life as the family holiday home of Alex Rorimpandey, a North Sulawesi native from nearby Tondano. Together with diving pioneer Dr Batuna, he developed this cottage into a resort, which opened in December 2002 with three guest cottages. Although Alex passed away in 2003, his children carried on his legacy, assuming control of operations and ownership.
The resort has now been passed on to a family from Jakarta who fell in love with the resort during a dive holiday here. They have been continuing the founding family's legacy and gently improving Lembeh Resort over time. From its humble beginnings, Lembeh Resort is now one of the leading dive resorts in Indonesia, and is globally renowned in the diving community.
The Creators of Lembeh Resort
Alex Rorimpandey was as passionate about the people and cultures of North Sulawesi as he was about diving. He believed in supporting local communities through training and employment, while also sharing the wonders of his homeland with visitors from overseas. Lembeh Resort was his gift to the island and its guests – a place where international travellers can explore the unique wonders of Sulawesi on land and sea, and local people can expand their horizons through professional development. As we move forward, the legacy of Pak Alex remains ever-present.
Our Dive Center, Critters at Lembeh Resort, is owned and managed by Danny Charlton and Angelique Batuna. Angelique is the daughter of the late Dr. Batuna, a pioneer of diving in North Sulawesi and an inductee to the prestigious International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame. Together, they opened Critters at Lembeh Resort in 2002. Since then, Danny and Angelique have continued to oversee its development and expansion, sharing their passion – and the wonders of Sulawesi – with visitors from all over the world.
