In the Spotlight: Underwater Videography Workshop Day 6

It’s the final day of Sascha’s first ever, exclusive underwater videography workshop here in Lembeh and our participants have had an exceptional week of diving and filming in the Strait. Some of the highlights (just a few) have included;

Donald duck shrimp, pygmy pipehorse, decorator and orang-utan crabs, reef, mimic and coconut octopus, yellow pygmy gobies, giant and painted frogfish, ocellated tozeuma shrimp, black ribbon eel, juvenile barramundi, Flabellina, Tambja gabrielae and Hypselodoris apolegma nudibranchs and both a peacock tail anemone shrimp and an ornate ghost pipefish carrying eggs.

When it comes to unique and unusual marine life, the Lembeh Strait is a red carpet of critter superstars just waiting to be captured on video.

Our in house Photo and Video Pro Sascha Janson has been hosting daily presentations covering everything from choosing suitable subjects, lighting, macro-video techniques and creative effects through to editing and soundtracks.

Today Sascha’s final presentation “Final Live Edit” walked the participants through editing from start to finish and we can’t wait to see the videos they have generated over the last week! We doubt that much will be left on the cutting room floor!

Our participants have enjoyed a week of diving in the Lembeh Strait on their own dedicated workshop boat with a dive guide to diver ratio of 2:1 to ensure optimal filming opportunities.

This evening they are looking forward to kicking back and relaxing with a great movie – made by themselves!

Here’s the video featuring some fantastic footage from the participants from the Underwater Videography Workshop 2017!

Today is the penultimate day of Sascha’s first ever Underwater Videography Workshop here at Lembeh Resort and it has been an absolute success. Our participants have generated some incredible footage of the critters here in the Lembeh Strait.

Today Sascha continued with Part II of his Video Editing Workflow presentation in which he took our participants through the finer points of editing footage using Final Cut Pro X. Sascha’s expert guidance has included tips on fading in and out, trimming, organising, adding appropriate soundtracks and title and end screens. We are looking forward to some great movies!

Not only have participants enjoyed a week of presentations with Sascha, they’ve also dived some of Lembeh Strait’s best dive sites on their own private boat. A 2:1 dive guide to diver ratio plus Sascha has ensured maximum opportunities to shoot our favorite critters. Evening time has been allocated to one-on-one sessions to answer individual questions.

Broadclub Cuttlefish (Sepia latimanus) in the Lembeh Strait

It’s day 4 of Sascha’s underwater videography workshop here in Lembeh and today’s dives were underwater blockbusters featuring Donald duck shrimp, painted frogfish, pygmy pipehorse and a well disguised decorator crab. The scene of the action was Serena Patah which is a Lembeh Strait hotspot and a favorite with our Dive Guides here at Lembeh Resort. Our 4 participants are diving from their own dedicated workshop boat this week with 2 dive guides and Sascha on board so they are certainly enjoying a personalized experience of diving in the Lembeh Strait!

This afternoon’s presentation with Sascha was Part I of his Video Editing Workflow series in which participants had their laptops at the ready for some top tips from Sascha. Sascha explained that quality editing can mean the difference between a good video and an amazing video. Sascha uses Final Cut Pro X for editing his videos because he says it is packed with features which enable you to get the best out of your footage. In addition to this afternoon’s presentation, participants will have one-on-one sessions with Sascha this evening where they’ll be able to get Sascha’s expert advice on their editing woes!

We look forward to welcoming you to Lembeh Resort in North Sulawesi soon.

Welcome to day 3 of Sascha’s underwater videography workshop here in Lembeh. Our workshop participants headed out with Sascha this morning on their dedicated private boat to Aw Shucks and Aer Bajo II – and these two sites certainly didn’t disappoint! Critter sightings included reef and coconut octopus, orang-utan crabs and yellow pygmy gobies but it was the ornate ghost pipefish with eggs that stole the limelight. The Lembeh Strait is known as the “Critter Capital of the World” for good reason and our participants are starting to see why.

This afternoon’s presentation with Sascha covered creative photography with video lights. Sascha explained that although video lights won’t give the same illumination as shooting with a strobe there are some other benefits of using this type of lighting. Video lights provide a constant light source which means that you can see on your view finder how the image will look before you take the shot, unlike when using a strobe light that fires as you take the image, meaning you are essentially shooting blind and can only see the results post shot. Video lights can also be used to create a variety of artistic effects including spotlights and shadows. This beautiful nudibranch image, taken by Sascha, is a prime example of what can be achieved with video lights when shooting stills.

Roll out the Red Carpet  – Underwater Videography Workshop Day 2

It’s day 2 of Sascha’s exclusive underwater videography workshop here in Lembeh and our videographers were treated to a red carpet worthy list of Lembeh’s critters at Pulau Abadi. Critter sightings included giant frogfish, ocellated tozeuma shrimp, black ribbon eel, juvenile barramundi, Flabellina, Tambja gabrielae and Hypselodoris apolegma nudibranch but the star of the show was a peacock tail anemone shrimp carrying eggs!

This afternoon’s presentation with Sascha covered LED lighting for video and stills in which Sascha explained to participants effective methods for ensuring good lighting, including video light positioning and distance from the subject. Sascha also explained about artistic effects which can be achieved through up lighting, back lighting and snoots.
